User Experience Study to Inform Portal Design

The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene sought to promote widespread use of its environmental health data portal and a related STEM-oriented curriculum.

Challenge

Cora Group created a series of curriculum modules for inquiry-based learning using an interactive environmental health information Portal. Working with content-area teachers, our team developed demonstration lessons integrating Portal use into classroom instruction aligned with Common Core standards. We piloted modules in NYC middle and high school classrooms and used feedback to finalize demonstration lessons for online access. Additionally, we conducted a Portal utilization study, analyzing user behaviors and recommending design improvements. We also developed a promotional video to introduce educators to the Portal and demonstration lesson modules.

Solution

The project dramatically increased public access to a wealth of continuously updated environmental health information, using technology-enabled database functions, as well as interactive learning tools and products. It made possible immediate access to municipal data to increase general knowledge about environmental health issues affecting NYC communities and residents to foster civic interest and engagement with the issues.
